Diffraction-limited CCD imaging with faint reference stars
By selecting short exposure images taken using a CCD with negligible readout noise we obtained essentially diffraction-limited 810 nm images of faint objects using nearby reference stars brighter than I = 16 at a 2.56 m telescope. The FWHM of the isoplanatic patch for the technique is found to be 50 arcseconds, providing ∼20% sky coverage around suitable reference stars.
متن کاملWide field search for nearby faint stars ?
A project to search for nearby stars in a wide field using Schmidt plates is presented. A field intensively observed allowed us to select a list of nearby stars candidates. CCD astrometry of 20 of these, acquired at the 1.23m telescope of Calar Alto is presented. Trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions have been determined. We confirm for six of our targets that they are nearby stars with d...
متن کاملA New System of Faint Near-Infrared Standard Stars
A new grid of 65 faint near-infrared standard stars is presented. They are spread around the sky, lie between 10th and 12th mag at K, and are measured to precisions better than 0.005 mag in the J, H, K and Ks bands; the latter is a medium-band modiied K. A secondary list of red stars suitable for determining color transformations between photometric systems is also presented.
متن کاملNew Distant Companions to Known Nearby Stars. Ii. Faint Companions of Hipparcos Stars and the Frequency of Wide Binary Systems
We perform a search for faint, common proper motion companions of Hipparcos stars using the recently published LSPM-north catalog of stars with proper motion μ > 0.15 yr−1. Our survey uncovers a total of 521 systems with angular separations 3 < ∆θ < 1500, with 15 triples and 1 quadruple. Our new list of wide systems with Hipparcos primaries includes 130 systems identified here for the first tim...
متن کاملTHE IMF LONG AGO AND FAR AWAY: Faint Stars in the Ursa Minor dSph Galaxy
The dwarf spheroidal galaxy in Ursa Minor is apparently dark-matter dominated, and is of very low surface brightness, with total luminosity only equal to that of a globular cluster. Indeed its dominant stellar population is old and metal-poor, very similar to that of a classical halo globular cluster in the Milky Way Galaxy. However, the environment in which its stars formed was clearly differe...
